Kokashita Art Project

Winners

The Motomachi Kokashita shopping street stretching from JR Motomachi Station to Kobe Station is an event venue in the downtown area that was newly selected this year. The project, which seeks to transmit the charm of the town and create flows of people with respect for the taste of the Kokashita (under the elevated railroad) area, makes use of vacant stores, etc. as exhibition spaces. The creators of 13 works that passed the first screening started production from April one by one, and have been producing their works through regular discussions with the people and the town.

■Judges' comments
For the Kokashita Art Project, 51 entries were submitted despite the short notice for application. A variety of project ideas were sent in from people with a wide spectrum of careers including artists and architects ranging in age from teenagers to people in their 70’s. Perhaps this is because they were attracted by the unusual advertisement seeking art project ideas from the public, or perhaps it was because they were inspired by the unique atmosphere of the JR Motomachi Kokashita shopping street. In the first screening of the competition, 13 works will be selected as prize winners from among the ideas submitted, and in the second screening, the winners of the Grand Prize will be chosen from among these 13 projects.

Many of the selected works utilize the venue’s characteristics, namely the peculiarity of the Kokashita area and shopping street, while also presenting the different aspects a visitor sees each time. Among these are installation works using light, stones, etc., collaborative works of creators (with viewers) and interactive works created through the involvement of participants.

The Kokashita Art Project is open to the public for about 6 months before the opening of the Biennale. The project is interesting in the sense that the production process itself, in which works are created with the involvement of people through the passage of time, is open to the public. We hope that the underlying appeal of this historic area will be promoted by making the JR Kokashita (Motoko) area available for use as art spaces, and also look forward to seeing the process of revitalization of the urban environment as well as the artworks.
