Art in a Container International Competition
Winners
This international competition, which employs the interior of a shipping container as a display space, is open to applications from the public and has been the main feature of Kobe Biennale since its launching. Shipping containers which migrate within and between countries symbolize Kobe, that has long been developing as a port city, through the constant coming and going of people, goods, and information. For the competition this year, we have received entries from various genres including design and architecture.

- Works submitted to the Art in a Container International Competition, which is the main exhibition of the 3rd Kobe Biennale, showed improvement in quality and became richer in variation each time the competition was held. In addition to artistic works, there were many entries from creators in the fields of design and architecture, showing that this competition in Kobe is characterized by its expansive coverage. Among the prize-winning works this year, entries from foreign creators made a good showing, demonstrating that the competition is truly an international event. The Art in a Container International Competition is where participants compete for excellence in creating an unreal space in reality within the limited space of a container, and we are looking forward to seeing how the selected works provide excitement when they are actually installed. Meanwhile, it may be the fate of this competition to develop a fixed pattern in video works, but we hope that participants will make much more experimental attempts to defy stereotypes in the future.
